LINCATS Collaborators
The Long Island Network for Clinical and Translational Science (LINCATS), established in 2018, is a collaboration between Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and the Northport VA Medical Center.
Stony Brook University
LINCATS is headquartered at Stony Brook University (SBU), a research intensive public higher education institution located 50 miles east of New York City in Suffolk County on Long Island, NY. A member of the Association of American Universities, SBU co-manages the Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory and has affiliated hospitals throughout Suffolk County. SBU is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, the largest comprehensive public university system in the United States. SBU is acclaimed for its success in boosting the social mobility of students and received the 2018 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award — a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion — from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. In addition, a study led by the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, entitled The Mobility Report Cards: The Role of Colleges in Intergenerational Mobility, recognized Stony Brook among the top 10 colleges and universities in the nation whose students begin college at the bottom fifth of income distribution and rise to the top three-fifths. In 2022 NY State Governor Hochul designated SBU as a flagship institution within the State University of New York (SUNY) system. Our robust track record in CTS and community engagement is enhanced by the new leadership at SBU. Our new President, Maurie McInnis, has already made sweeping investments in research and education, while deepening our relationships with collaborators and initiating bold new programs, including robust commitment and support for CTS.
Brookhaven National Laboratory
This multipurpose Department of Energy (DOE) research laboratory houses large, state-of-the-art facilities such as Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials. SBU is a partner in Brookhaven Science Associates LLC, managing the Laboratory for the DOE. Located less than 20 miles from campus, SBU is Brookhaven’s most integrated academic partner with 75 joint appointments across colleges, 5 joint initiatives, and a large number of student and staff users of the facilities including a $960 million x-ray facility with nanoscale resolution. Notable projects include:
- Medical imaging and radio-isotope probes: led by E. Boros, PhD (Project lead Element E) Collaboration with BNL around developing new applications of isotopes for medical imaging and therapeutics.
- cryo-EM work, led by D. Tan, PhD (SBU Pharmacology) in collaboration with BNL faculty. Joint project with BNL to use cryo-EM for studying structure and function of biomolecules. This work leverages the cryo-EM facilities at both BNL and SBU. This complements the collaborative work that is performed at the National Synchrotron Light Source II on protein crystallography and structural biology
- COVID-19 project led by C. Simmerling, PhD (SBU Chemistry/Laufer Center) in collaboration with BNL to determine structural properties of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, using both computational and experimental approaches.
- AI and medicine: led by S. Skiena, PhD (SBU Computer Science/AI Institute) in collaboration with BNL researchers to develop AI/Machine Learning (ML) approaches that are applicable to several aspects of medical technology.
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
This multidisciplinary biomedical research and education center, founded in 1890, is situated 23 miles west of Stony Brook, with programs in cancer, neuroscience, plant biology, and quantitative biology. In 2020, approximately $41 million in federal funds were awarded to Cold Spring Harbor. Their education programs cater to high school through post-graduate trainees and include translational research programs. In 2022, they have 140 postdoctoral trainees and 110 graduate students. Noted ongoing collaborative initiatives include:
- Thirteen inter-institutional graduate programs based at SBU, including Genetics program with SBU, BNL, and CSHL
- Associated MD/PhD program (Medical Scientist Training Programs [MSTP]) based at SBM
